tempera on board, chalk-gypsum underlay, gilt; 22.6 x 17.7 x 1.9 cm.
Balkans, 19th century.
A holy martyr, he lived from 89-202 and was probably bishop of Magnesia in Asia Minor. He is the patron saint of the faithful asking for help in times of pestilence, famine and cattle pestilence. Prayers to him were supposed to protect from sudden death. He is depicted with a bearded face, a closed book in his left hand and a blessing gesture of his right hand.
The name in Greek means "shining with happiness."
