majolica, high-temperature paints, lead glaze; height approx. 56 cm; not signed.
Italy, factory undetermined, late 19th century. - XIX/XX century.
With an ovoid body, on a spool-shaped foot with a ring at the base, cup-shaped neck and bipartite serpentine lugs set in masks; in two ovoid reserves on the body, mythological scenes(?): 1) in a park scene with a fountain with a statue - a female nude - a seated Roman warrior and standing next to him, a gesticulating woman in a flared robe, with a spear of her hand; 2) in a landscape with rural buildings, a gardener (farmer?) carrying a flat basket of fruit and poultry(?) on his head, with a dog beside him. Around the neck, foot and on the surface between the miniatures a gray-beige grotesque on a dark blue background, and motifs of
floral and pincushion ornament. On the vaulting in the upper part of the belly a colorful grotesque on a beige background; the decoration supplemented with a sequin ornament at the edges; the foot after conservation or new?
A technologically and painterly efficient pastiche of Renaissance ware, stylistically referring to majolica from Urbino and Castelli.
