Gilded bronze, polished ebony; oval seal field: 2.2 x 1.9 cm; overall height: 9.2 cm.
France, 2nd half of 19th century.
The stamp probably belonged to Alexander Walewski (1810-1868), illegitimate son of Emperor Napoleon I and Maria Walewska (1786-1817), participant in the November Uprising, Minister of Foreign Affairs of France or his son, living in Paris. The piston may also have been commissioned by the Polish branch of the Counts Walewska. The French origin of the seal is indicated by the very precise engraving, the decorative finish of the sleeve and the ebony handle not used in Polish seals.
