Poland, Zakopane, 1920s-1930s.
Life-size figure: standing saint, slender, in long robe, with slightly bowed head wearing a crown; in her right hand she holds a chalice with the Host in her slender fingers.
St. Barbara of Nicomedia lived at the turn of the 3rd and 4th centuries; she suffered martyrdom during the reign of Emperor Galerius. Her attributes are a sword, a tower and a chalice with the Host: according to legend - when she was imprisoned - an angel appeared to her with a Eucharistic chalice. The beheading with the sword was to be carried out by her own father. Signature on the front at the bottom: "AE" (tied monogram). Preservation condition: visible cracks in the wood due to woodworking, a replacement host (original host half preserved).
