Originally, Tadeusz Rybkowski studied at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at the Main School in Warsaw. Thanks to the scholarship he received there and the engineering education he acquired, he was able to finance the study of painting at the School of Fine Arts in Cracow under the direction of Władysław Łuszczkiewicz. From 1875, he studied in Vienna in the studio of Leopold Loeffler and then Hans Makart. In 1893 the artist settled permanently in Lviv, where he headed a school of painting for women and taught at the State Industrial School as a professor of decorative painting. He was involved in restoration of wall paintings and illustration. In this regard, he collaborated with Oskar Kolberg, preparing drawings for his ethnographic studies. He drew for magazines including Kłosy, Krakow's Świat and Tygodnik Ilustrowany. He was one of the founders of the Lviv Association of Polish Artists. Since 1920, he held the position of president of the General Union of Polish Artists in Lviv.
