The scene on a low rectangular base with relief semicircles around the gilded sides pastiches the Meissen composition The Allegory of Smell by Johann C. Schönheit (1745-1794), belonging to a series of five allegories of the senses developed by this sculptor in 1775. In the Meissen original, the lady is sniffing a flower, and there are flowers in a basket on the table and on her lap. In the offering presented here, the lady seated at a table with a flask and a flat oval vessel holds a small jar (?) in her left hand, raising her index finger to her nose, with which she has acquired a sample from the vessel.
